POINTS OF INTERST IN PARIS

City Hall

The Paris City Hall (Hôtel de Ville de Paris) has been a center of political life in Paris for centuries. It was rebuilt after being set on fire during the 1870 Parisian revolution. During the Middle Ages, people sentenced to death were hanged or burned at the stake on the Place de Grève in front of the city hall. This square is now decorated with fountains.

Ecole Militaire

Ecole Militaire is a military training school. Its construction was financed by Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, who sold her jewels to pay for it. Among its illustrious alumni are Napolean Bonaparte.

Point Zero

This bronze plaque is embedded in the stone of the sqaure in front of Notre Dame cathedral. It is the point from which all distances from Paris are measured.

Place des Voges

This charming square is built on the former site of Palais Tournelles, where King Henri II died in a jousting accident. Victor Hugo once lived here.

Les Invalides

Noted for the gleaming gold dome of the Dome Church, Les Invalides was opened by Louis XV as a military hospital. Napolean's ashes are interred directly below the dome.
